If Jesus Had a Blog: Big-Time Leaders

Still hammering away on an old Gateway laptop at a coffee place in Judea.  I'd love an iPad, but I don't think AT&T is going to work out here.  Like, ever.

Anyway, there was this crowd today, and all these big-time religious leader fellers.  These guys LOVE being recognized, being significant, being "The Man" and all that.  And people give them the accolades, too:  "Ooh, it's my teacher!  My leader!" -- that kind of stuff.  So I says (and I'm quoting myself from the New Living Translation, owned by Tyndale):

Don’t let anyone call you ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one teacher, and all of you are equal as brothers and sisters.  And don’t address anyone here on earth as ‘Father,’ for only God in heaven is your spiritual Father. And don’t let anyone call you ‘Teacher,’ for you have only one teacher, the Messiah. The greatest among you must be a servant.

Were they cool with that?  (Snort.)  Uh...no.  They weren't cool with that.  I told them that the people who thought they were "all that" now, with titles and what-not, would get humbled, and the humble would wind up being "all that".  That didn't fly, either.  (I did notice a shy smile from the custodian...)

Truth is, the big shots get accolades, but you know what?  They just make life harder for people.  I told them that.

Well, this doesn't surprise me, Jesus.  You've been anti-clerical for a long time, ignoring thousands of years of tradition.  This kind of caps it for me.  Not fair.

-- BigBob209

I guess I see where you're coming from, but really:  They're ALL bad?  You've apparently had some bad experiences in the past, and I'm sorry for that, but you don't need to make big blanket statements.

A lot of good comes from these guys, and you can't argue with how big their followings have gotten.  Maybe a jealousy issue...?  I don't know.

-- davec3410

I was there and all I heard was, "Blessed are the cheesemakers"...?

[From J:  Don't take me literally.  I meant ALL makers of dairy products.  BTW, we've got to rent "Holy Grail" next time.]

-- pete_the_rock

You sure like rocking the boat.  I think you're throwing some good people overboard.

Some of these guys are our top experts on scripture, and I can't see how calling one my teacher is such a bad thing.  Yes, there are a few bad apples, but what are we supposed to do, stop learning?

You say you, Jesus, are they only real teacher?

Uh...are you going to personally be in every religious building?

I bet you won't.

-- vision4life2020

Yeah, I gotta piggyback on vision4life up there.  I usually get where you're going, but we need people in the offices of the teacher or the leader or, in some traditions, "father".

You've got to delegate, and have somebody have some kind of stand-in status.

Fact is, you're one dude, and you can't be there every time two or three people get together.

My Pastor has seven books.  I don't see any of yours in our church BookTime CoffeeCenter.

-- luv_n_grace

This post made me cry.  How dare you.

My husband is our church Teacher.  He is a man of The Word, and there's nothing wrong with recognizing that he is anointed to be the Leader.   It's not like this is a glamorous position -- he's had to put up with jerks in every church he's led.  Now, he's being called to be the Leader of a different place, we think, and so we're going there, and if they want to act like he's their official Teacher, I don't see the problem with that, and they offer a better health package.

Point is, you're really judgmental.  The real leaders are the servants?  Who's going to be on the church stage?  Why don't you put the volunteer custodian up there, then?  See how many people come to THAT church!

-- deb4213

Why did you say, "You're all equal as brothers and sisters"?  We knew that.  No one believes otherwise.  What's your point?

-- someguyscaredtousehisownname

I think you guys aren't being fair.  Chill.

I think Jesus is only saying here that we shouldn't be Catholic or Jewish.

-- intheword4ever

So teaching the scriptures makes life "harder" for people?  Good.

Studying IS hard.  Keeping the Word IS hard.  Keeping track of the right stuff to do IS hard.

No one said it would be easy.  No one said the burden would be light.

Gee, nice post.  Real well thought-out.

I can see why your Technorati rank for blog readership is like, twenty-millionth.

-- lifecenterworshipguy

You need to spend some time reading the epistles, apparently.   What Bible College did you go to...?  Are they really accredited?

I almost wrote here, "I love these posts. You should write a book of these." Then I realized that I just missed the point. *facepalm*

Everyone seems to be throwing a fit. Jesus was not people friendly, that's not to say He doesn't love His children. Some of the 'translations' people have come up with seem very twisted and far from what Jesus was saying.
"Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth" - Matthew 5:5, comes to mind when I read these comments and blog post, God doesn't love you any less if you have a position that is large or small. It could be compared to giving those that had a great life being humbled and the ones that took some hard times and weren't noticed get some credit in Heaven. The Parable of the Rich Man in Luke 16:19- and Matthew 19:24 (With the rich young ruler) which also goes on to say in Matthew 9:30 “But many who are first will be last; and the last, first.", these are great scriptures that prove Jesus meant what He said and the humble will be shown respect in the Eternal Kingdom, the kind of respect they didn't get here on Earth. Which is only my thoughts based on what I've seen and read from the Bible. What does it matter anyways? We will all be worshiping God and it won't matter who has what crown, only God will matter. The way it should be.

Seriously, this is one of the best blogs I've read in a long time. We as christians need to remember that we are not entitled to anything without Jesus. So many of our church leaders think they're entitled to a certain status that makes them higher than other people. This is completely contradictory to what Christ teaches us about leadership. And, just in case you were wondering, I am one of this church leaders, and I hope that I never become caught up in my man-made title but remain rooted in the idea of walking through life hand-in-hand with others, learning together as we journey toward Jesus.

Yall are missing the point. The point isn't being made that we should put the custodians up on stage, or that we need to kick preachers off the altar! The point Brant's trying to make is that the priests and Sadducees were caught up in there own narcissism and conceit. That they need to give up on being so vainglorious and pretentious, and actually start serving the people, considering that's there job.

Furthermore, if you think that priests are above being servants to the people, you're dead wrong. I don't care who you are, if Jesus - the Son of God, the Messiah, the Everlasting - did it, I'll be darned if you're too good to do it.

Not to mention the fact that this is merely a humor-able piece. You all are acting like the Pharisees and Sadducees in the bible, too caught up your own self worth to get the laugh Brant meant to put there.

Great take on what Jesus would Blog, I loved it.

I want everyone to know I say this out of love to begin with, but what is happening to our faith and love for the church these days. Jesus loved the church, no if's and's or but's about it. Sometime we Christians are our own worst enemy trying to be the new cool way of Christianity. Why is it everyone loves to beat on the church and the pastors are the central targets? We spend more time looking for problems with pastors and churches than working on our own walks with God. Yeah there have been some bad pastors and churches, but there is also bad everything's and every bodies; preachers, teachers, lawyers, judges, construction workers, and yes dj's, but that does not make them all bad otherwise we are being prejudice to the whole field. I am a pastor God called me to be one like He has called others to do other trades with the gifts that He gave them. I am not better than anyone but I have spent years getting educated on the Word so I don't just give my opinion on the Word, or interpret it to make me feel better and make excuses for what I am personally going through today. I am a pastor, husband, dad, friend, and in today's world an open target; especially for the self righteous Christian world. Again I say if we would just focus on the man or woman in the mirror instead of looking out our own dirty windows the world would be a better place. Who are the Pharisees of today?

Along with Rabbi, Father, Teacher, can we add Pastor to that? Those big 'P's' tend to replace the little 'g's'.

So I think it's amazing that everyone who takes issue. Takes issue w/ the words of Jesus you quoted not the commentary you provided... I'm just sayin.

I LOVE "if Jesus had a blog" You are so creative with the reader posts, trying to put what would have been said then into a modern day context. These always make me think.
Posted By Merlene | June 11, 2010 @ 2:44
Come on Jesus, don't we have enough people criticizing the church w/o you adding to the bunch ?
Posted By Tracey | June 12, 2010 @ 4:48
I'm not sure what the deal is, why are so many people freaking out. The blog was about leaders that are like the pharisee's of Jesus time. The one's that like to have recognition for the sake of being a "religious leader." I think there are many pastors and leaders that are not like that. I think they would be the first ones to say that they don't want to be idolized, that their whole life is point people to the true teacher. Jesus is our focus, not how well-regarded our pastors are. That doesn't mean that we can't like our pastors or appreciate the responsibility that they've taken on our behalf. But when we're telling people about our church is it that we're excited that God is in his proper place or how well the choir sings and how charismatic our leaders are? I am guilty of this sometimes, it's a good thing that "Jesus" keeps us in check.
