If Jesus Had a Blog: This One Religious Guy SO Didn't Like My Answer

So this one religious guy walks up, and he's got this rep for knowing all the rules.  And he goes all like, "Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

So I said unto him, "What is written in the law? How readest thou?"

And he answering said, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself."

And I said unto him, "Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live."

...and lo, he was not cool with that.  At ALL.

Can't say I blame the guy.  You just wrote off studying scripture, being baptized, repentance, the church -- the whole works -- as worthless.

Maybe he was hoping for someone to actually help, instead of a simplistic sound bite.

I usually like your blog.

But you totally had a chance to seal the deal with this guy, and you just gave him an answer you knew would upset him.  You could have prayed the sinner's prayer with him, could have showed him the chart-thing with the two cliffs and the stick figure on one side and God on the other and how the cross would bridge the gap, but instead you do this, knowing he'd be ticked off.  I don't get it.

-- phillyphan22

And how are we supposed to quantify "love"?  How do I know I'm saved then?

How is this answer supposed to help?  How do I check this off?

I'm with "savedbygrace".  Instead of being simplistic, why not just give him the right answer?

Wow...just wow.

-- i_always_say_wow_just_wow24

this is neat because i love GOD a LOT an d i cant do much right sometimes so i love that you said that

-- jess

Sure, it's really neat that a carpenter from backwater Nowhere can wipe out 2000 years of theology in one blog post.

Seriously, do some reading before you make up simplistic answers to eternal questions.

-- theophilus_phd

This is why I LOVE this blog.  You tick off religious people, and make people like me feel like God loves me.  God actually *loves* me.  That is so wild to think about sometimes!

-- marymags123

Jesus Christ, I don't know where you get this stuff.

I realize it's "hip" and "emergent" now to say it's all about love, blah blah blah, but there IS such a thing as the Bible, and we do have rules about the Truth, and it's not just "love".  Sorry.

Jesus, it's amazing what people will believe when we get away from solid teaching.

-- rootedintheword1972

I think what Jesus REALLY meant to say is that this guy wasn't particularly loving, so he needed to love.  He did everything else just fine, like tithing and keeping the Sabbath, and love is just another one of the things you're supposed to do.

That's the way I look at it.  Jesus was just saying love is another thing to check off the list, and this guy was doing a good job on the list, and so it's just one more thing.  Right Jesus?

-- sallyann

No, Jesus REALLY means that you have to take this in context with all of the Bible.  Jesus knew that guy would eventually have a New Testament, so he could understand that Jesus didn't really mean that eternal life wouldn't really be based on loving God with heart, soul, strength mind, and loving neighbor.   God knows it's not that simple.  If it were, I could preach in less than 35 minutes.

-- RevBoy22

No, what Jesus REALLY means is that God has a wonderful plan for your life, and you need a daily quiet time like NOW or else you're really blowing it, big-time, and you need to start witnessing more fervently, and memorizing The Word.

-- goterrapins1990

No, what Jesus is REALLY trying to say here is that we've lost a sense of right and wrong, and especially kids these days.  Which isn't surprising, because we don't even pray in schools!  Pass this on to ten friends if you love Jesus!

-- huckafan2012

huckaby sux

-- blinkrulz

I think what Jesus is REALLY saying is that he's flipping nuts.

Imagine if we really started believing this stuff.  All we have to do is "love" God, "love" our neighbor as ourselves, and we live eternally in the Kingdom of God.  So everyone who doesn't "love" God, even if they tithe, pray, preach, evangelize, memorize, all that stuff -- won't be in the Kingdom?

Is that what you're saying?  So I guess we can just do whatever we want then.  Neat.  Hellooooo chaos.

-- disappointed_with_this_blog

Hey "disappointed"...if you don't love God here, why would you even *want* to go somewhere where He's FULLY in charge?  Think about it.  Maybe people who don't love what He's about here would really hate heaven anyway.

Um, I'm not sure how anyone can say Jesus was "wip[ing] out 2000 years of theology." I could be wrong here, but, uh, I think he was fulfilling it?! And the "theology" some believed in was perhaps skewed, twisted, misunderstood renderings of who God really was - and still is - because that is what theology is - the study of God. And as far as I know, God doesn't change...so Jesus' theology must have been the right one - because He was God and is God - and He always seemed to be mentioning that if you knew Him, then you knew the Father...so I'm assuming that the Old Testament theology must somehow line up with the New Testament theology. Jesus knew this man's heart and would certainly have led him to faith at that moment, had he been ready...if anyone were ever ready to jump at the chance to share the gospel and save, surely it was the Savior, Himself!!! So I don't think we can begin to accuse God, Himself, of making a mistake here. Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm going to go with God (Jesus) on this one.

The entire point Jesus was trying to make to the man - and to us - is that it's absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to love God and love others perfectly, as He demands...so we need Jesus, an intercessor, a substitute, a savior, to forgive us and make us holy. Jesus came to fulfill the law, to superceed it with a new one where we no longer were bound by rules, but empowered by His Spirit working in us! We know we are saved when the Spirit proves to us that our faith in Christ is indeed real, because the Spirit is changing us into someone other than what we ever were before - we're miraculously able to show the love we never could before, to forgive as Christ forgave, and, amazingly, have a heart that aches when Christ's aches, and rejoices when He rejoices!!!!!

I find it puzzling that so many people have a problem with this post. Jesus said this, it's not like it's made up or anything. I don't think people are upset that it's over-simplified, but that it's under-simplified. It's no small thing to have a love like that. It's God given. And you can only get that kind of love by excepting that Jesus is God and receiving the gift given by grace of his death for our sins. It may only be a few sentences, but it's way deep. And most of us Christians, me included, would love that all that is expected from our life is to just believe in a guy, and that qualifies us for eternal life. Then we can just keep on living the same way we've been without a change. But it doesn't happen that way. Yah, it's simplistic. To love God and others. But it's darn hard to do if your heart hasn't changed. If someone can check those things off, they can check off all the other "christian" things too.

I am shocked. Those were words right of of Jesus' mouth. All the commandments are wrapped up in those two. It is not chaos! If you love God with all your heart, soul and mind. EVERY decision you make will be in striving to keep God's word. If you love your neighbor as yourself...you no longer judge others and give everyone else the same shot you give yourself at getting it right! People that NEED to be told what to do specifically and are not led by God will find this very offensive.

It's funny how often we say "what Jesus really mean't to say or what Jesus was trying to say" don't you think that what He said was "really" what He meant?? Just thinking here....Brant,Pablo, and Nikki love your show!! Brant, Gladson the little boy with Compassion International from India is doing very well.
God Bless!!!!!

Wow...I'm not saying I disagree with all the theological comments, but it's funny how alot of the comments are trying to guess what Jesus meant. "this is what Jesus was saying." "this is what He meant." Whereas Brant's post is words that Jesus actually said...It also strikes me that everyone who seems so dissapointed in the post is like the religious guy in the story. "having a rep for knowing all the rules..."

"Scuze me, but do people not realize this is the Bible? I think it's really funny that people think this is an actual run-in you had with someone, and they're all, "GEEZE LOUISE!!! WHY DIDN'T YOU GET HIM SAVEDAH!!!!" Um, these are the words of Christ, folks. Take it up with Him. And before you go blasting this blog, you MIGHT want to change your screen name if it involves loving mercy or grace- just a thought.

You guys are cracking me up with what Jesus was REALLY saying! Lol!

Jesus had a lot of people following him around in those days. Some people were serious believers, a lot of people were just curious about him, and others just wanted a miracle or food. In this passage, and in John chapter 6, I think what Jesus was doing was testing this guy's intention and level of trust in him.

Jesus did say elsewhere that one should count the cost of being a disciple and to be willing to leave everything behind to follow him. This will test our trust and faith in him. Jesus wants everyone to follow him, but he he also wants everyone to be serious about following him. Remember what he said to the church in Leadocia? If you are neither hot nor cold, but lukewarm, I will vomit you out of my mouth (as in "you guys make me sick with your indifference toward me!").

This passage is spoken to those who think they are righteous but are really not giving their all. The same thing could be said about the passage of John chapter 6 where Jesus is describing his body as bread and his blood as wine. He was speaking to the Pharisees as well as the other people who were following him, whether out of curiosity or seriousness. The ones who are serious about following Jesus will trust him completely in whatever he says to us and however he leads us.

Jesus is all about love. When we love God and love each other ... to me, all things fall in place. Love, Love, Love. For anyone who believes that Love does not conquer all... you should really read somemore in the New Testament.

We are saved by grace... thank God!

Great job, Brant! Love it... keep it coming!

Has anyone ever really tried to Love ---- "All-ways and Anyway" ?
Read 1 Corinthians 13.....
Thank you Jesus for your Love and you Life

I loved the blog. Jesus was so simple with so many of his teacings that the religious leaders were confounded. And it really is that simple.....if you love GOD with all your heart, mind, and strength you will go out of your way to please him. But like any relationship it takes work and time. And we ARE HUMAN! we make mistakes and beat ourselves up over them. GOD doesn't want us so hooked on the mistakes that we can't move on and do the work he has for us.
Love you guys!

What is love, anyway?
Does anybody love anybody, anyway?
Posted By howard jones | April 28, 2010 @ 1:40
Just so everyone knows, Jesus got this "stuff" straight from a very reliable source. God. Who better to know how to get to heaven than the Creator?

If it doesn't make sense to you, then let me tell you what I think. Maybe it will help, maybe not. If we love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, then we will want to do what He says. If we love our neighbor as ourself, then we wouldn't treat anyone bad because who wants to be treated bad? Jesus wasn't talking about the shallow, selfish emotion that we, in our flesh, try to pass of as love. He was talking about love from God. And the only way that we can receive this love is through His Holy Spirit.

Paying tithes, praying, going to church, reading the bible are all wonderful things. But they are not The Way. They are like the smooth stepping stones in the mud in the road. The mud stands for the trials and suffering that come with being a Christian. The stones help us to get through. But Jesus is the road, the only road that we can take to get to God! Everything else, we do in response to the love that we have for God and the love that He has for us!

Think about it. Better yet, pray about it. Talk to God and expect HIm to give you an answer.

Brant, I think you do a great job! And I think that the things you guys say on the show are insightful and inspired by God. Continue to let Him use you!

I'm confused... Do people think these are actual responses to an actual blog? Brant writes these as funny, sarcastic, sometimes snide, but very real responses that people (HYPOTHETICAL people) would say. He's writing the blog AND the responses!! Therefore, the point of the piece is to get the reader (you) to think how you would react, not rip the hypothetical responses.

The message of grace is controversial and offensive to the carnal human nature. The rich young ruler didn't want to follow, yet Jesus didn't water it down so he would want to. Maybe some preachers (I won't mention names) in today's church could learn a thing or two about not watering stuff down to confrom to the masses.

And the question remains, how would YOU respond?
Posted By Cory D. Jones | May 3, 2010 @ 1:44
How bout asking Jesus what He thinks about this? Why does everyone just assume? Love was a big topic of His teachings, maybe this is to reiterate that. Maybe encoraging love would encourage the man to read the Bible since he loves Jesus in order to teach the true way to get to heaven.
Really though, I would mostly suggest to ask Jesus His thoughts on the topic.
